I am getting here from Beijing via a proxy server. I cam e to this site because I am getting a sophisticated form of spam that could only know some of my personal details by hacking my computer with a keylogger or by actually spying on my packets at the ISP level (I don't have any keyloggers or other spyware, etc., on my simple test machine -- triple checked).

After receiving this very suspicious I purposefully corrupted the the http address that I was asked to click on and was sent to a fake "about.com" shell, then after a few seconds, got this message:

bjdnserror4.wo.com.cn

Is the Chinese government hacking Gmail user accounts and setting them up with spam? Is this some form of Chinese government harassment against google/Gmail?

I want to pursue this matter fully.

SA,

Thanks for your info. Which URL are you typing in when you try to access Gmail? The URL on this page - www.mail.google.com - is actually incorrect, because the www. part is superfluous. Many URL's related to Gmail are tested by our system, eg http://www.greatfirewall.biz/https/mail.google.com.

The GFW can and might reroute you incorrectly by altering DNS lookups. That is to say, it's possible that you enter about.com but are taken to a different website. One way that we can monitor this is to check where the server is located. If the servers are located in different countries depending on whether the website is accessed from China or from abroad, and the server used to serve Chinese users is in China, our system marks the website as "redirected to China". Those websites are listed here: http://www.greatfirewall.biz/redirected-china.

However, there could be much more detailed filtering going on for example depending on your cookies and IP which would make it more difficult for us to detect. Please continue your testing and share as much as possible with the rest of us.

You can contact us here or at greatfirewall.biz@gmail.com.
